Okay, seems silly to be replying to my own mail but I checked with someone
who writes multisession Cds under linux and the magic ingredients are as
follows:

kernel 2.2.19 (that's what he uses)
cdrecord
mkisofs

so, it *can* be done, but this means I'll have to kiss goodbye to ext3,
unless someone back ports it to the 2.2 tree. I really am left with the
option of booting into 2.2 for the cdwriting. The greatest advantage where
ext3 scores over the other jfs is the backward compatibilty, so if you
need to use a rescue disk or something like tomsrtbt, you can still mount
your ext3 partitions. ymmv.
