You are confusing two different things. Your i586 installation will work fine 
on 686. Second;y to entirely upgrade linux installation to 686, you have to 
upgrade the distro.

If you ask me it's not worth of an exercise. Upgrade any hardware you want and 
reconfigure the new hardware. That's it. You don't need to touch your entire 
installation..

P.S. It would be great if you make sure that only one copy of your mail reaches 
list(May be not your fault but watchout..). Besides precise and neatly 
formatted requests attract swifter suggestions..I would suggest putting capital 
letter at the start of a sentence as a good idea..
