You are confusing two different things. Your i586 installation will work fine on 686. Second;y to entirely upgrade linux installation to 686, you have to upgrade the distro. If you ask me it's not worth of an exercise. Upgrade any hardware you want and reconfigure the new hardware. That's it. You don't need to touch your entire installation.. HTH Shridhar P.S.
