Well to stop the services nearly all distro s come with some kind of setup progs. RUN ntsysv in Red Hat and disable the desired services. Well U can try linuxconf which comes with all distros and put services u dont want to run to manual startup from automatic. Control ->control panel-control service activity.
For the adventurous the linux init comes in 2 flavours sys V type and BSD type. Most distros have sys V type but some rare one s do not I think slackware is one. In sys V type check what runlevel u r running from inittab (most probably 3 or 5 5- graphical login). Then go to /etc/rc.d/rc(your run level no).d/ and rename the service filenames U dont want to run from prefix S to K. For a standalone computer U need to run keytable, gpm, xfs , random, network only. I dont know if random is also that necessary . But U would also like to run autofs and lpd (if u have a printer) . Unnecessary services generally provides security holes to a connected computer.
