i recently found out that dictd can be used locally. i downloaded a
couple of databases from ftp://ftp.dict.org/pub/dict/pre (took me a
week), and the thing is running! i can now use kdict/gdict without
having to connect to the net. this is a big thing when you're on dialup.
the webster database is old - it's the 1913 version (doesn't have the
four-lettered word :-). the wordnet database is newer, but not as
comprehensive - doesn't have etymology etc. using both together, it's at
least a poor man's alternative to my OED (cdrom version), which will run
only on windows :-(
there is a sample initscript with the dictd tarball. after editing it by
hand and adding proper pathnames and chkconfig lines, it can be used for
bringing dictd up at boottime.
this kind of thing is perhaps trivial for experts on the list, but it
sure gave me a kick to be able to do all this successfully myself, being
only a semi-newbie :-)
