Hmm, I thought there was a Xconfigurator and then there was xf86config what is this X-Config ?? Also as far as I know Linux doesnt select anything for anyone. Well to think of it neither does Xconfigurator or xf86config other than finding out the driver to be used. What they usually do is use the Video RAM available to calculate what all resolutions are possible. Unlike the windows display drivers which are aware of all the safe resolutions for your monitor Xconfigurator and xf86config can only suggest a good resolution for you. 640x480 is safe for all (SVGA capable) graphics card unless it is a VGA mono or some of those ancient hardware. I would request the original poster to let us know which distribution he is using and what did he use to select his resolution. We would be better placed to answer his query after that.
