Did you try to use an ESMTP client to test it instead of trying by hand?  I'm
not sure - but I certainly dont think blank AUTH works.

Next - if you use LOGIN PLAIN auth, set up TLS support in that mailserver.
If you dont want / can't do TLS, implement CRAM-MD5 or similar AUTH.  No use
sending cleartext passwords out through the 'net.

You can use aliases to  decrease the amount of typing you need 
to do to get commands you commonly use. You can  place them in 
your startup file (.login) as well. Under csh and tcsh: 
alias lf ls -FA
alias ll ls -lA
