hi there

this might sound really stupid, but i need your help!
I have 2 problems which is psyching me!

Currently we have the folowing setup :

            -------------------------------------------------
            | |
(192.168.1.102)----------HUB---------(192.168.1.1)--->To Internet
 (squid proxy) | (ISDN Modem/Router)
                                            |
                                            |
                                            |
                      (198.168.1.2-192.168.1.21)
                                    (Local Lan)

The above setup works fine, ie, for the machines on the local lan, the proxy
server is 192.168.1.102 (squid).
Now, i want the setup to be such that, the machines on the local lan, must not
be able to give 192.168.1.1 as the proxy. All external trafic must pass through
192.168.1.102

I tried removing the cable from HUB to 192.168.1.1, but when i do so, i just
cant connect to the net (via the local machines on the lan)

One more thing is, i have 2 interface cards on the squid proxy
(192.168.1.102(squid on 8080)-Router and 192.168.1.100-to HUB)

What must be config on each of the machines ? (local and proxy server)
Do i need to change the routing table ?
what must be the gateway for the local machines on the lan ?

The next problem is with squid. Squid is running fine, but the TCP_HITs is very
very less. I figured out that the TCP_HITs are for very small objects only
(<5kb) (info from access.log)
How to improve the performance ?

The config of the machine is :(squid proxy)

256 MB RAM
PIII
20 GB HDD
RH7.2

the cache-memory size is set to 64 MB (if i increase it further, squid does not
start!!)
all others are defaults (squid.conf)

Any help would be of great use.
thanks in advance.

regards,
