Heck.. Are you in KDE and artsd is enabled? Disable it and reboot.(Yes that's 
reboot. When KDE media player aka noatun crashes, nothing else can use sound 
card. If you know any remedy for this, let me know.)

 Then first try mpg123 before going into X. It should work. So should xmms..

It's a long known bug. With KDE2.2.2 noatun doesn't crash every now and then, 
but when it crashes, it crashes hard..  Haven't had that error on MDK8.2 ever 
since I have installed it though..
