There may be some error in your your .muttrc. Just check out the
"set folder=" ... the default is Mail, it should be set to ~/mail
if you intend using $HOME/mail as your mutt folder.

Cannot comment unless you post your .procmailrc

This is unlikely, fetchmail by default will download mail to the
mail spool (/var/spool/mail/username). You do not need procmail
to be run at all. If you omit the MDA process, invoking mutt as
"mutt" only will bring up all mail in /var/spool/mail/username.
It will ask you if mails are to be saved in mbox set in your own
.muttrc in the setting "set mbox=" at the time of quitting.

The syntax for calling up procmail as MDA through .fetchmailrc
is: mda "/usr/bin/procmail -d %s" .. The -d switch is important
for explicit delivery to local recipients. Just check this out.
man procmail for details.

To enter single user mode under grub, press "e" [edit] at the
grub boot menu and edit the boot parameters "kernel /vmlinuz
root=/dev/hdN single" (where N = your root partition)... Then
reboot using "b" [boot]... Easy ?
