o Please note syntax. There has to be a space between the
  device and the mount point.
  
o If syntax is not the problem, this error may  still come
  up in case vfat support is NOT compiled into your kernel
  as static or as module. Many  stock  kernels of  some of
  the distros has this as a loadable module. In which case
  you need to do:
  
  #insmod /lib/modules/2.x.xx/fs/vfat.o
  
Check out if this is the cause ...
