hi anand,
   good linux..
a piece of advice try to always get external modems as
far as possible on Linux platforms...
 there was a thread in the recent past on Sm56
Motorola modem problems.... so please check the mail 
archives.. but well you can try this is it helps...
1. try to run wvdialconf as root and see if system 
 detects the modem, it will throw some crap on the
screen see it carefully. then it will create
/etc/wvdial.conf file , in that you can try to give
login and password, use stupid mode is u connect to
bsnl. check man wvdial, man wvdialconf tool.
2. even if the things don't turn up try to detect
modem through setserial command, u can get some howto
on this from www.linuxdoc.com(or org not sure).
 hope this may help u a bit.....
