Gnus and VM are two mail readers which you can use under Emacs.

If you use GNU Emacs, VM is not probably included by default. You can
download it from http://www.wonderworks.com/vm. If you are having XEmacs,
VM is already included. VM is a mailreader which has all the features of a
modern MUA: All the GUI, POP, PGP etc. Also it's very easy to configure and
use. AFAIK, the only guy in LI* who uses VM is Raju.

Gnus (http://www.gnus.org) is actually a news reader + MUA and comes with
both major GNU Emacs and XEmacs. We read mail in Gnus in a *news-readerly*
way. I am still a Gnus newbie, but as far as I can tell, Gnus is one of the
*best* mail/news program I've ever seen.

As Suresh said, using Gnus is not that difficult since it has all the
GUI. Only thing that you need to starup is a minimal .gnus which should
allow you to send/receive mails. You can get some howtos, tutorials etc
from MGO. (http://my.gnus.org)

Gnus is a complex program with nearly a 100,000 lines of Elisp code and
it's extremely customizable. It may be tougher, but in the end, it will be
extremely rewarding.
