hi If bios permits booting off CD, then the things could work out a lot more easily.
edit fstab, mtab. remove any reference to current hda, and replace hdb with hda. Remember / partition , now hdax. Now connect hdb in place of hda Boot off cd and when it asks for parameters, just say linux root=/dev/hdax ro. Once it boots run lilo. expert opinions are most welcome!
