I am not very sure of MDK-8.2. On a workstation, normally about
100 to 150 mb is adequate for /var. Don't really know what is
taking the space. In another post you have noted that you have a
105 mb /var of which about 46 mb is used. This should be enough.

You can find out of some files have grown out of proportion, and
suitable for pruning. The following will help detect space hogs.
(Total usage and file wise usage would be obtained).

#du -s -b /var .... get size of /var in bytes
#du -a -b /var > somefile .... get component sizes (in bytes)
#less somefile

In any case, you have a 2.2 gig "/" partition of which more than
one gig is free. As per your other post:

/dev/hda5 2.2G 1.1G 1.0G 50% /

You may always move your /var under / since you have over 1 gig
left, and use this 105 mb partition for some other purpose like
archive or something else which won't expand dynamically.

Just my 2p

You can use aliases to decrease the amount of typing you need
to do to get commands you commonly use. Under BSD shell shells
(ash, bash, ksh, and zsh), place in /etc/profile or ~/.profile
alias ls="ls --color=auto"
alias lsd="ls -d */"
