up2date is just a tool to be used with RedHat Network subscription. No
one stops you from setting up n number of id's for n servers. No one
stops you from adding 100 servers to one id and then toggling the free
subscription from one server to another while you upgrade.

Look at it this way. If you are a stand alone user you dont have
anything to worry about. You dont have to worry about managing multiple
servers you dont have to worry about your system being automatically
updated the moment a patch comes out.

The only people who would be interested are those who are managing
multiple servers and for whom keeping their systems updated till the
last minute is very important. If you are one of those kind of people
RedHat requests you to take a subscription or else you make the extra
effort of managing multiple userid's or toggling your free
subscription.

The updated rpm's are also available at other servers but ofcourse as
of now up2date cant be configured to use a different URL to pick up the
rpm's.
