Huh? Never seen this before. Maybe the client and the server are
using incredibly different versions of rgb.txt. Another possibility
is the X server itself. What OS is xdm machine (the X client)
running?

That's it. Once you get into -indirect you effectively have an X
server running. Session management is handled by the X client, and is
transparent to the X server. What you /could/ do is use a run level
(say 4) to start X with -indirect. Then you can use init to bring the
session up and down.
