Hello listers,
I guess some clarification is needed with terms like MBR,Partition Table,Partition etc.

1> In case your boot record(MBR) is overwritten by Windows Programs you have not lost any of your data. You would have only lost your BOOT LOADER like LILO, GRUB etc. In such cases both the partition table and Linux partitions themselves are intact and can be accessed using LOADLIN.EXE with a stock Kernel after booting into DOS Command Prompt. Once Linux is up and running you can always reinstall LILO back on the MBR.

2> In case your partition table is corrupted the problem is more complex but again the data in your partitions is still VERY MUCH intact. If only you knew the exact original partition table values(start sector, end sector,Partition ID etc) you could very easily reconstruct your partition table with NIX utilities like FDISK,DD or even dos programs like "DEBUG.EXE" and carry on. I dont know about logical drives inside the extended partition. But that too can be retrieved as someone had said sometime ago on the list.

3> If the data inside a partition is lost the only way is to restore it from tape backups, CDROM backups etc.

Regards,
G.Sriram.

I had experienced this once. I did defrag of C: and before that it does
scandisk. I selected automatically fix errors. Bang after defrag my linux
partition vanished. MBR overwritten.

Now if I have Win98 SE and Debian on my machine. If I do scandisk of C:
(I never select automatically fix errors now :-)), it gives error
problem with boot sector, fix the error or ignore. I have to select
ignore.

May be this might have happened in your case.
Peace
