from what i've read gentoo is definately the best distro out there,
once you get it to work.

again from what i have read, gentoo requires that you download most of
the apps that you want and compile them. this makes your os mean. lean
and fast. but does require a fat bandwidth to the net, some amout of
expertise and a little patiance in the beginning. but in the end you
get a system that is custom built for your machine and as a user you
will be much more aware of what makes your system tick.

at least one of the list members that i know of, i think Shankar runs
gentoo. he should be able to advise you.

if you don't have a good net coonection, try debian, or mandrake.
choose a window manager like enlightenmet/windowmaker/fvwm/mwm... etc.
