dear rishi,

the problem is not in detecting it as hdc. it is first detected
as hdc, then ide-scsi mode is emulated. it also seams that
your /dev/cdrom and /etc/fstab are perfectly nice. then only
two possibilities are left. i experienced the first one once.
after trying to read from a defective cd the scsi bus hanged.
after that i could not unmount and remount CDs and not only
CDs but also the ide harddisk partitions. that thing continued
even after a hard reboot. i am clueless about it. i had install
everything afresh. even reinstalling /dev entries didn't work.
(**CAN ANYONE PROVIDE ANY HELP - I WILL
REMAIN GRATEFUL TO HIM/HER****) so if that
happened to you, please check. or the second, it is a
hardware specific issue of samsung cdrw/dvd-combo.
[ i have not seen a single one to perform correctly ;) ]
and again to group members: CAN ANYONE HELP?

jaybrata
