You can run mplayer/xine etc too on your machine if you switch to a lower
resolution.

Back when I used to work on a slow machine(p1/p2)... with a 2MB ATI card ..
even WMP wouldn't play VCDs properly... but I could always watch movies on
linux by setting the resolution to "320x240"

You can always add a seperate user to you machine just to watch VCDs and
define a special Screen and ServerLayout section and have that user do a
startx -- :1 -layout mplayer

should work great on even the slowest of machines.(pentium class atleast)
