I have a Celeron 400MHz with 160MB RAM, and MPlayer run without any problems whatsoever. Also, a few months ago, when I had 64MB RAM, it still ran without any problem. Again, a few more months ago, when I had 32MB RAM, it ran very well at 600x480 resolution and probably 16 bit or maybe 256 color ( I forgot ).
