cp -r will copy directories recursively. cp -a will copy and preserve attributes. (cd <path to parent of old directory> && tar cp <directory name> ) | (cd <path to new destination> && tar xp ) I transferred almost 51GB of data over the network between two remote servers using a variation of the third command :).
