You can do the same/similar thing using Slackware 8.x CD, or Tomsrtbt floppy or the BBC CD etc. etc. I think Tomsrtbt will be most suitable in your case, google for it, download the latest version and install it to a floppy and use it to recover your linux installation. You will have to do a fdisk -l to list your partitions and locate your root partition. Mount it under /temp and chroot to /temp. Then proceed to reinstall grub as instructed earlier.
