Hi To my understanding you have a windows and/or dos system + a linux and you dual boot using grub, but your grub is being erased when you reinstall windows or some software.
If this is what you want then you could just copy the kernel and initrd to the dos partition before reinstalling windows and boot up from pure dos prompt using loadlin. OR Just get a linux boot floppy or a linux boot cd.
