Look for something like TMDA (that's a challenge response bot - yet another bad idea, but you should be able to get ideas from it).

Looked at it just about when it came out. I think it's a good idea for configuring on one's personal mailbox, if the consequences are fully understood, but certainly a bad idea for a server/site/domain wide installation.
