oops in a kernel is caused when some part of the kernel does something nasty, which is 
often the case with device drivers which are either malconfigured or the hardware is a 
problem. it would've been better if you attached the oops message also. upgrading 
would help if the oops was happening because of a malconfiguration or a very old 
version of the driver being used. however, if the hardware itself is a problem then 
upgrade might not always be able to help (although sometimes it prints a better 
message :) )
