Stable <-- critical updates only
       <-- old packages
<-- best for servers (security is critical)

Unstable <-- MUCH more frequent updates
         <-- latest packages
         <-- more suited for desktops

I also admit the fact, as does the head of the Debian team, that their
release cycle is waaay slow. In fact Debian is working actively on speeding
up the release cycle. As crazy as that may sound to Debian purists, it is
true ;-) (Refer to the archives for an earlier mail from me about this)

If it is your choice to install stable on a desktop, you can't really crib
can you ;-)

How come you are not complaining about not having the latest and
greatest KDE/GNOME/X in stable then?

* /etc/apt/preferences
  Package: mozilla-firefox
  Pin: version 0.8*
  Pin-Priority: 1001

That is something I did 10 minutes ago. Is that so cumbersome as to
overshadow all the other advantages of sid?

Hmmm.. you sound like you will not use the solutions as you think they
are cumbersome and you still want to crib. I don't want to sound rude,
but I know *lots* of people who happily use Debian unstable on their
desktops and are ready to live with the occasional hiccup.

The practical suggestion from me, keeping in mind the current state of things
is: that if you *definitely* cannot handle unstable (why? the list is always
there to help when you get stuck!) and you are not happy with any other
Debian tree, then move to another distribution.

Aah! Now there is an idea that we can use. Remove packages which have an
extremely short life-cycle from stable. Worth it if you ask me.
