On the questin of fast booting I must say Debian and Gentoo have pretty neat boot scripts. I've tried RH, Knoppix, Mdk, Slack in addn. to above.
Gentoo scripts recently introduced parallel excution of some commands . That *might* help immensely on multi-processor confs. On others I'm not so sure. The fc-cache problem is a little solvable tho. The fc-cache is done to update the font cache if any new fonts have been added. so if there are none then rebuilding the cache is a waste. There is the scope of improvement. Same goes for ldconfig too perhaps. I'm not sure. Just check if there are any other places you could cut down.
