What kernel did you build ? Monolithic or Modular ?
Normally people go with modular kernels, If that's the case, you've missed 
make modules and make modules_install

Very Bad. Why replace the original running kernel. Instead copy the new one 
with a new name.

You should be having a lilo.conf file. If not copy it to lilo.conf.
You've not told anything about your disks' type and partition structure.
The above error can only be sorted our once we know that.
