I don't understand much to your statement here. This is what I (and maybe most of the other Debian users) do when I don't like the default binary package distributed by Debian. Download the source package using apt-src and build it. If I understand that you're talking of it being outdated soon or breaking the package management system, that doesn' t happen incase you use "stable". If not, the same will apply to RH. As for software compiled from pure source (like MPlayer on my laptop) I use "stow" to manage the files, and have been using the same MPlayer that I compiled 5 months back. I've have serveral "upgrades" since then but where did it break ?? Or where did it create problems ?? I can't spend hours of my daily work building a "0.01" release change as a background process in my machine. Instead I'll prefer utilizing that resource into something more creative.
