What does lspci -v say for your video graphics adaptor? And what
version of Debian / xfree86 are you using? Debian stable / woody is
quite old and the xserver in it does not support newer cards that
well. Also, in Debian different xservers are packaged seperately:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ [34] $ grep xserver /var/lib/dpkg/status | grep Package
Package: xserver-common
Package: xserver-xfree86-dbg
Package: xserver-common-v3
Package: xserver-3dlabs
Package: xserver-xfree86
Package: xserver-8514
Package: xserver-mach8
Package: xserver-s3
Package: xserver-agx
Package: xserver-fbdev
Package: xserver-mach64
Package: xserver-tinyx-fbdev
Package: xserver-vga16
Package: xserver-mach32
Package: xserver-s3v
Package: xserver-p9000
Package: xserver-i128
Package: xserver-svga
Package: xserver-w32
Package: xserver-mono

You must install the one which suits your graphics chip.

# apt-get remove xdm
# apt-get install gdm
# /etc/init.d/gdm start

The graphical screen enables you to log in as root and make gdm
network listener.
