I had the same problem with a T40 a while ago. The thing is that
S-video has two signals, luminance and chroma, and the cable you have
is transmitting only one. There is a another type of cable which can
transmit both. I got the impression that this is well known, since a
neighbourhood hole-in-the-wall TV repair technician explained this to
me and gave me the right cable.
