What does 'hangs' mean here? Just stops working and responding to
everything or anything else?

Check what does 'cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all' spits. If
that is 1, make it 0. This makes it respond to pings.

If that entry is already 0, its time for wild guesses :). Are you sure
that ICMP echo support is compiled into the kernel?

More of wild guesses :) Are the DNS entries (/etc/hosts to be more
specific) in all the machines properly configured?
