You almost answered it yourself <g>  FOOBAR comes from US 
army (and later hacker) slang fubar (f***ed up beyond all 
recognition) - where f***ed can mean "fouled up" if you're in polite 
company :-)

these are used to say "any generic function" - that's part of it.  For
