u can do one thing 
remove the encrypted chracters between : : and save /etc/passwd file for
RHL 5.2

for RHL 6.x
make the changes in /etc/shadow

but for this u at least need to put the login.....it won't ask passwd.

but before doing changes to passwd files keep backup of those files.
