Thanks for the tip, doctor. I will try all these options today itself.
There are minor differences..
1. The chipset of mine is 86C268 instead of 86C362, and this number is
not supported as yet, with the stock server 3.3.5 [However I have
downloaded the 3.3.6 SVGA and S3 servers already and will try those
tonight.]
2. A rather humble question for you, is yours too an 8 MB AGP card?
Please point out the differences if any.
3. Using 'no_accel' will turn off the AGP aceleration, right?
Do reply at the soonest.
As for my adventures with FBDev last night, bada maza aaya.
Created a link to SVGA_FBDev
specified mode at the startup [It was really nice to see Tux at the
start]
Booted my machine at level 3 of init.
Starting X first, gave error no 2 [execev]
I tried other modes... [from Table by Atul, posted earlier.] and the
error
in X reduced to
'there should be at least one screen section pointing to driver : svga'
Fine. I re-ran Xconfigurator and chose my card etc. Chose RAM manually.
8192 VRAM on board 86c268 S3 Trio 3D/2x card. File was created and this
time I did not deleted everything in the screen section. Simply replaced
the entry 'XF86_SVGA'in the top section with 'XF86_FBDev'.
This time, when I started X, the machine simply hung. Had to reboot.
I have not yet tried the prescription of Dr. Shahrukh, so I think you
people
do not reply to this mail yet. Will present everything in detail
tomorrow and
then, poof.. let us better solve it.
Hey - On site documentation of XF86 3.3.5 says that the card is
supported.
[But they say nothing about this particular chipset, 86C268 which does
not appear
as an option in XF86Setup]. Also, probeonly recognizes the card name
correctly,
but the output also seems to suggest that the card is a PCI card
[details tonight]
It will be a long mail from me. Beware...
