Hi out there!

Sorry if this is a FAQ, but I did not find anything definite about this
in the documentation.

What is the status of IrDA support in late 2.2.x kernels? Is a patch
necessary? The IR-HOWTO indicates so, but is dated. The patches from
www.cs.uit.no/~dagb/irda/snapshots/ for 2.2.x kernel stop some time
early this year (kernel 2.2.9, May or so), after that only 2.3.x version
came out. Does this mean that maintainace has ceased for 2.2, that IrDA
is fully merged in recent 2.2 kernels or prevent server problems the
distribution of later patches on this particular server?

Secondly, both make and make install fail with irda-utils-0.9.4,
although it seems make includes make install and ./configure. Is there
an older version that compiles? My system is not _that_ old: SuSE 6.1
with hand-made kernel update to international 2.2.12. The README files
indicates that make should run flawlessly, instead it stops with

*** Installing programs ***
cp: irdadump/nox/irdadump: No such file or directoy
cp: gnobex/gnobex/gnobes: No such file or directory
make: *** [install] Error 1

There were no previous errors...

Also, the make command assumes . being in $PATH and run as root.
Something, no serious admin will do.

All in all, this built process is rather clumsy: It is absolutely
unusual that 'make' includes make install, thus making the normal
user-make and root-make install impossible.
Also, the make process uses autoconf internally, so why not let the user
make just his ordinary

user$ ./configure
user$ make
(user$ make check)
root# make install

but instead invent jet-another-built-semantic?

TIA,
Marc
