I couldn't remove the serial stuff, since my normal modem and my mouse need
it...
setserial /dev/ttyS1 uart none did the trick freeing up its resources though.

For some reason the version of dongle_attach shipped with Red Hat 6.1 needs
it in the form dongle_attach irda0 -d girbil ....

however it's all working now. When my cellphone goes into offpeak I'll see if
the link is any better...
