Yes, it will do this if the link is broken. pppd will give up and retry ...

What does irdadump say? ifconfig or "cat /proc/net/dev"

BTW: No need to run pppd or ircomm until you have the discovery working.

Could you please confirm if you are using irda-utils-0.9.5?
