I can answer my own posting right now...
I've fiddled with different kernels and different utils and am quite happy
with 2.2.13 and the .23 patch as well as the 0.99.10 irdautils.
The solution to my problem seems to be the handshaking. I've disabled
hardware handshaking and everything works well now.
dialout via minicom works as well as my ppp script, both use software
handshaking now.
Fax is not tested yet, but I seldom need that while on the road.
