No.  I normally use cslip so this had not crossed my mind.

But this makes the phone work, but the throughput it dissappointing
and I cannot keep the connection up for more than a couple of minutes.

Did this comparison downloading files:

        Motorola L Series       pppd/nocrtcts,xonxoff   116 bytes/s
        Ericsson GH768 + DI27   pppd/crtscts            666 bytes/s

Are there other pppd options I should be using?
