If connectivity by a land-line alternative is not an issue, the cost and
speed are serious impediments, but be clear this is not a problem with IrDA.
Assuming you have everything configured properly, the performance with
a 768 and Di27 is the same as with a 768 and DC-23v4, the PCMCIA alternative.
If you are in a location where GSM is your only option, it can be worth
the cost, provided you take care to minimise connect times. I use my
Linux system from our yacht, and keep the costs down with a number of
Unix tricks. See "Linux under Sail" if you are intested in pointers.
