The Toshoboe driver included in the kernel driver is very old.
And it is not the same as in ftp://gimel.esc.cam.ac.uk/pub/irda/

So I take the last one (version 2.12) and applied some changes
as it has be made with the old 1.91, until I compile it
without errors, and without warnings.

I tested it, with the other PC using irtty.
irdaping works.
but not irnet. the connection fails (on the irtty side) with:
Nov  9 21:39:15 bcv65wea pppd[722]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/irnet
Nov  9 21:39:15 bcv65wea kernel: irnet: irnet_discover_daddr_and_lsap_sel():
unexpected IAS query failure
Nov  9 21:39:45 bcv65wea pppd[722]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
