You guys rule!
I got my Sony Clie IrSyncing with my laptop last night. This gets around
the lack of USB support for now. It is a little slow... but I don't
expect miricles :-) For your info I am using a Toshiba Libretto 50ct with
the most recent IRDA utils ona 2.4.0-pre12 Kernel. The biggest problem
that I had was the fact that I was allowed to compile the irda module into
the kernel and this is apparently not a valid thing to do. Now it works
great.

My remaining problem (which I think is Clie related not IRDA but perhaps
you can enlighten me)... The Clie pops up a waiting for sender dialog box
when I stick it in range of my laptop. If I cancel out of it and then
start my sync it works fine. The one guess that I have (which I can't try
because I just thought of it and my laptop is at home) is that the
discovery protocol is exciting the Clie because it doesn't understand
it... Any other comments?
