Personally I'd rather do it the other way around - make the default
build against the shared lib and have a special target for building
statically, since from a user's perspective the first is more usual.

I don't remember writing any rule to build shared vs statically; AFAIK
I always did it statically which I thought was kind of hacky but easy :)
