Was karma_helper setuid root at some point in the past?

It seems like root u+w would be the correct permissions for those files.  
Perhaps udev can configure the permissions on those files, or else you can
either chmod them suitably or use sudo...

I don't think anything specifically changed on the kernel side of things.
