Ok, so I started with next-20180116, and: 1. verified that it still panicked. 2. reverted bb2192123ec7 "mtd: partitions: add of_match_table parser matching" 4ac922277847 "mtd: ofpart: add of_match_table with "fixed-partitions"" 3. applied the V8-series. 4. verified that the device boots, so cmdline seems to be considered.
