That's going to run: $ pkg-config --libs libcrypto || -lcrypto If libcrypto.pc isn't there, it's going to get this: -lcrypto: command not found I think you meant: +CRYPTO_LIBS = $(shell $(PKG_CONFIG) --libs libcrypto 2> /dev/null || echo -lcrypto)
