The solution might not be a hack, throwing it in there quickly as a
one-off is a hack.

Your argument is sensible, I would need to see (or write) the code
you're referring to, in order to be able to form an opinion. But having
two separate ways to express the "same" thing deserves more
consideration.

Looking at how the SMMU configuration will look in the next generation
might even speak in favor of what you're suggesting. Let's sync up after
Plumbers.
