I still have to use Windows95 for my scanner, video capture card, and
StarCraft. The thing is, I like my computer to boot to Linux by default,
so Lilo defaults to Linux. In order to reload Windows I have to shut down,
reboot and wait for the Lilo prompt to tell it to load Windows. This is a
pain.. I'd like to be able to do something that would automatically halt
Linux and reload Windows95 without changing LILO to default to Windows95.

this happens only to 2 (out of 7) partitions. both partitions 2G in

what made me scratch my head even harder, one of the complaining

Thanks for the reply.

My problem was that certain applications (i.e. grass) would not allow me
to use /files to store files when logged on as other than root because
of permissions problems based on the owner/group. Since I could not
chown or chgrp vfat directories, I found that I could umount and then
mount /files in the user account (since I have user as an option in
fstab) and then /files (and subdirectories and files) would have the
correct owner and group. It may be best to include a noauto in fstab
and then just mount the partitions as needed, I haven't decided on that
for sure yet.

OK here is the problem, Red Hat's sound card config recognizes the sound
card, but when it plays a sound sample I can't here anything. This is what
is in my dmesg log:

sv: unloading
sv: version v0.14 time 17:09:49 May 14 1999
sv: found adaptor at io 0xda00 irq 10 dmaa 0xac00 dmac 0xac10 revision 3

modprobe: can't locate module sound-slot-1
modprobe: can't locate module sound-service-10

I have sound support compiled in the kernel and the sonic vibes driver from
the kernel.

What's wrong anyone know???????

Ok, This could get long...

I have pretty much the same setup at home.
(I'm going to assume that you're starting from scratch)
Use either a DOS boot disk or a 98 startup disk to boot the computer.
Then use FDISK to set up 2 partitions (DOS boot disk don't have fdisk,
so you'll have to copy it over yourself.)
One partition for 98 (probably 3-4 GB) and one for NT,
(2 or 3) Gigs.

Install 98 and the first partition, the NT on the second.

Then make a set of Linux boot / root disks in either 98 or NT, your
Linux distribution will say how to do this, either in the readme or in
a howto.

Reboot the computer off the linux boot disk, and create a partition
out of the remaining HD space 1 - 2 GB. Set up Linux as usual, and be
sure to install LILO.

In theory, everything sould now run fine and when you start the
computer up LILO will show up and ask what OS to boot.

Good Luck!

(I use sbpcd=0x230,SoundBlaster myself, but I'm using SuSE, so I'm not sure

Of course, you might need different values to the ones I've got. It's card
and CD-ROM depenent.

: should I clean out all mods I don't need....???

That's the whole point of make menuconfig. You're only supposed to make
modules for hardware you currently have... Or plan of getting soon.

It looks like it's wasting a lot of time autoprobing.
You'll probably need to edit down your modules.conf file to something
realistic.

What about Penny; since the Linux-penguin is named Tux (masculine)
he needs a mate, Penny. We don't want to be sex-centric, do we.

Tux (short for tuxedo) is semiformal evening clothes for men,
therefor masculine.

Any ideas how to do this ?

If you delete the .snm-files, which are created by the windows version you can
read your email. But if you download new mail, the mail filters won't work. The
bookmark file is everytime deleted and new created when you quit netscape. So it
doesn't even work if you make a hardlink between the windows bookmark.htm and
the linux bookmarks.html. And it doesn't work if you set a different bookmark
file in the prefs.js.

I have both the windows and the linux version installed on a linux server, which
acts for the linux clients as nfs server and for the windows client as smb
server.

Thanx in advance, Martin

I believe this could be upped to 32k. Wasn't that the kernel's

Normally you can use "usekde" to do that for you. This is a script that kde
installs. Each user who wants to use it must type that in once to switch
over to kde.

You're talking about the binary RPM's, he's talking about the source code.
Last I checked, source code should still compile under most any distro of
Linux.

For the pre-compiled binaries, I suppose it needs files that 6.0 includes
but that weren't available in 5.2.

I repeat the suggestion that you compile the source. It shouldn't be by any
means platform specific, so it should compile under 5.2. Remember that you're
looking for a tar.gz archive, not an RPM file.

These and RPMs do not require compiling.

You need to install a bunch of development packages. At least you
will need make, a compiler (called something like gcc, egcs, or egcc),
binutils, libc development files, and (possibly) kernel headers.

This might not be enough; please return here with further questions.

I'm running a linux( 2.2.5-15 from RedHat) news server
on a network with a number of SCO5.0.4 systems. I would
like it to keep time with the other systems on this
network. When I show the time with date, it appears they
are close - within a seconds or two, but when I run:

 /usr/sbin/timedc clockdiff serman
time on serman.wse.com is 25042792 ms. ahead of time on
linuxman.wse.com

The hardware clock is set to the system clock time

The time difference is approximately the difference between
GMT and PDT which is what date shows to be the TZ on both my
 Linux and SCO systems ...

Is this just an incompatability between Linux and SCO or
perhaps I missed something in the setup?

The first time I loaded Linux (ver. 0.99 or something like that)
it was before slackware, was it LSL ? (anyone remember)?
It was a floppy distribution of 20+ diskettes.

I had it running on a 386DX-25 with 8 meg, even got X to
run on a Diamond Stealth24 with some hacking. I believe my harddrive
at the time was 340Meg.

I once got linux to install on the same 386 machine with a monochrome
card and a 40 meg drive. And got X running too, it wasn't pretty though
without all the colors and everything was so big...

The answer was a bit terse, but you would only have had to type it
into a search engine to find out that it is indeed one of the more
famous print filters.

Subject: network name cannot be not found

After reading all the documentation on Samba that I could find I was able
to finally able to get Win95 and NT to recognize my passwords for my
directories.....but now when I enter my password I get a "Network name
cannont be found" error. So I guess I need to modify some path somewhere
(most likely in the smb.conf in the global section). But what do I need to
have entered to get a good "Network name"???? If you have any ideas please
help. Thanks in advance for any help.

Sorry - I messed up my /etc/hosts file (somehow).

I now get an smbclient login prompt but can't login :

/var/log/messages gives :

Jun 12 18:10:50 chestnut PAM_pwdb[679]: get passwd; pwdb: structure is no
longer valid

which corresponds to me doing this :

chestnut:/etc$ smbclient -L chestnut
Added interface ip=192.168.1.1 bcast=192.168.1.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Password:
session setup failed: ERRSRV - ERRbadpw (Bad password - name/password
pair in a Tree Connect or Session Setup are invalid.)

Can anybody suggest what I messed up now ?

Sorry about that - I'm having a bad day.

Thanks,

Subject: Why is sndconfig needed after each boot on my Thinkpad??
Date: Sun, 06 Jun 1999 21:33:32 -0700
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have a Thinkpad 380ED (model 2635 6A0) running RH6.0 and the sound
card seems to work well using the cs4232 module for the Crystal sound
chip. At least, it records using dd bs=8k count=4 < /dev/audio >
sample.au
and plays back using cat sample.au > /dev/audio

However, after each boot I have to take 20 seconds to re-run sndconfig
in order that the sound works properly. If I don't, I get error messages
"Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error?"

The trouble is I can find no difference in any files before and after
running sndconfig. I have looked at /proc/interrupts, /proc/dma,
/proc/ioports, /proc/devices and /etc/conf.modules. What is sndconfig
doing to make the sound work??? If I knew that, I imagine I could set up
something automatic to avoid having to run sndconfig.

Thanks,
Graham Crowder

For reference, the /etc/conf.modules file contains:
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias sound cs4232
pre-install sound insmod sound dmabuf=1
alias midi opl3
options opl3 io=0x388
options cs4232 io=0x534 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=5

Does anyone know of a Linux abalone game besides KDE's

kabalone. Kabalone is the weakest player I have ever seen. I beat the

"challenge" level consistently within five minutes. Any help would be much

appreciated.

AFAIK, there's only one real "GUI" (XFree86), but several Window Managers.

Semantics, I know, but I'm annoying that way :>

I can't quite answer all of your questions, but I'll try from my (somewhat)
limited knowledge.

I've run the following window managers, and below each are my comments;

KDE:
Feature packed, Win'95-esque.
Massive!
Slow! (P166 w/ 64 megs of RAM, and I can see dialog boxes opening?!)
Unstable (First app to ever, *EVER* force me to hit the reset button!)

I no longer use KDE. I've only got it installed because I can play the games
under other W.M.'s :>

IceWM:
Simple. Win'95-ish in that it has a start meny/task bar.
Pretty small.
Faster'n greased lightening. The simplicity of it helps immensly.
Stable. I don't recall it ever crashing on me.

I use IceWM whenever I log in as root and need the GUI. With no background,
I can be in and out in seconds.

Window Maker:
Midway between IceWM and KDE in features. Linux-esque (No start bar!!!)
Not as small as IceWM, but not even as large as KDE's BASE backage.
Quite stable. I've never had it crap out on me, but it seems a little
fussy about changing libraries it uses.

I use this as my primary W.M.

Other window managers I've seen are;
Afterstep, AmiWM, asbutton, BlackBox, Bptb, Coolicons, DFM, Emacspeak,
Enlightenment, flwm, FVWM, FVWM2, Fvwm2gnome, FVWM95, GXDesktop, Mgs,
mlvwm, QVWM, SCWM, tkworld, UDE, wm2, wmx, Wsio, XFce.

All of these are available at Linuxberg (http://www.linuxberg.com);
select the mirror closest to your location, X11 software, Desktop Managers.
